update 2: since the new version weave 0.7 there is not even this setting i am talking about (which device: desktop vs. mobile) anymore, so all of this is obsolete anyway…

the weave extension for firefox synchronizes bookmarks, tabs, history (and thereby your entries in the awesome bar), forms, and – if you wish so, passwords in an encrypted fashion through a cloud between several installations, os, or machines. a-w-e-s-o-m-e!
however, i recently ran into a problem while installing and setting it up on the fifth os i occasionally use: i could not get it to work for the love of it…
this is what i first said:

after quite a while i realized that i hadn’t done a thing this time i had done on the other machines without clear awareness (apparently it is not tricky enough to really burn itself into memory, but also not so banal that it jumps at you as a solution of the problem). so here’s ze solution: make sure that you pick the right type of device (see below) when synchronizing for the first time. otherwise the damn thing won’t even twitch, but still delete all the local bookmarks, passwords etc. in preparing for the incoming stuff if you have selected to overwrite local things from the cloud.

update: oh, and one more thing: weave needs to be regularily updated on all machines you’re using it on. apparently things still change between versions that hinder compatibility. weave will not work if it’s not up to date.
